Feeding by Life Stage

🐶

Puppy

Tiny-breed puppy formula. Feed 4–5 times daily until 4 months, then 3–4 times until 8 months. NEVER skip meals. Keep honey or Karo syrup available for hypoglycemic emergencies.

Transition to adult food: 9–10 months

🐕

Adult

Need only 120–250 kcal/day. Feed 3 times daily for blood sugar stability. Tiny kibble or wet food. Quality over quantity.

🐕‍🦺

Senior

Maintain 3 daily meals. Dental disease is nearly universal. Heart health nutrition (taurine, L-carnitine) becomes important.

Dietary Considerations

Hypoglycemia can cause seizures, coma, and death — frequent small meals are essential, not optional. Dental disease affects almost all Chihuahuas — dental kibble and regular veterinary cleanings are critical. Their tiny size means toxic doses of foods like chocolate are proportionally very small.

What to Look for in a Food

Tiny-breed formula with smallest kibble size, calorie-dense (high protein 30%+, fat 18%+), dental support, taurine for heart, easily digestible.

Weight Management

Even 0.5 lbs overweight is significant. Use a gram-scale for food if possible. Some Chihuahuas are picky — rotating proteins can help.
