Feeding by Life Stage
Puppy
Must eat large-breed puppy formula with controlled calcium. Feed 3 times daily until 6 months, then twice. Lean growth reduces cancer and joint risk.
Transition to adult food: 14–18 months
Adult
Need 1,800–2,800 kcal/day. High-quality protein (25%+) essential. Feed twice daily minimum for bloat prevention.
Senior
Reduce calories but maintain protein. Joint support critical. Monitor weight — excess weight accelerates joint and cardiovascular problems.
Dietary Considerations
High bloat risk — feed 2–3 meals, avoid elevated bowls, no exercise near eating. FDA has investigated grain-free diets and DCM — consult vet before feeding grain-free.
What to Look for in a Food
High-quality animal protein (first 1–2 ingredients), glucosamine/chondroitin, omega-3, L-carnitine for heart. Protein 25–32% for active adults.
Weight Management
Should be muscular and athletic, not bulky. Many Rotties are kept too heavy. Visible waist, palpable ribs, strong muscle definition is ideal.
